1893

The 7th April, em São Tomé e Principe, José Sobral de Almada Negreiros is born. Son of António Lobo de Almada Negreiros, a lieutenant of the cavalry, founder of some periodicals and Elvira Freire Sobral, originally from  São Tomé.

1895

Brother António Sobral de Almada Negreiros is born.

1896

Mother Elvira Freire Sobral dies.

1900

Sent to Boarding School at a college of Jesuits in Lisbon. Father goes to live for Paris.

1905

First illustrations in periodicals manuscripts appear

1910

Goes to  Coimbra, due to abolition of the college of Jesuits

1911

Returns to Lisbon to enter the International school, where he is self taught in a  workshop given to him by the school.

1913

Gives his first solo exhibition with about 90 drawings. Writes "Rondel de Alentejo", which is later published in 1922 in "Contemporânea 2".

1914

Publishes "Silêncios" in "Portugal Artistíco 2".

1915

Publishes "Frisos" in "Orpheu 1". Writes "A Cena do Ódio" for "Orpheu 3", which is partially published  in 1923, as supplement  to "Contemporânea 7", and integrally in the third series of the"Líricas Portuguesas", organized by Jorge de Sena in 1958

1916

Publishes pamphlets with the "Manifesto Anti-Dantas e por Extenso", the manifest "Exposição Amadeo de Souza-Cardoso, Liga Naval de Lisboa" and "Litoral" poem.

1917

Publishes the books "K4 0 Quadrado Azul" and "A Engomadeira". Directs the Futurist Conference in theTeatro República.  Publishes the "Ultimatum Futurista às Gerações Portuguesas do Século XX",  in the only edition of "Portugal Futurista", the poem "Mima-Fataxa -Sinfonia Cosmopolita e Apologia do Triângulo Feminino", and  "Saltimbancos (Contrastes Simultâneos)"

1918

Writes choreography of dances for "A Princesa dos Sapatos de Ferro" (in which he also dances) and "O Jardim da Pierrette", whose program  is published in a brochure.

1919

Desolate with the death of 31 year old  Amadeu de Sousa Cardoso , a close friend  and master who influenced him tremendously, he departs part for Paris looking for new inspiration for his Painting and the writing.  He does not look substitutes for his masters, but looks to fill the emptiness with himself. The search in  Paris does not last more than one year.

1920

Returns to Lisbon. Does another solo exhibition. Writes and  illustrates the periodical manuscript  "parva" where he includes the poems" Mon Oreiller "and" Histoire du Portugal pair Coeur et au Hasard écrite pair Moi pour 4 Month Cousines ".

1921

Enters as an actor in the film "0 Condenado". Collaborates with articles, stories and drawings above all in the "Diário de Lisboa". He directs and publishes the conference "A Invenção do Dia Claro"

1922

Initiates a collaboration in the "Contemporânea" magazine  with  words and drawings from "Histoire du Portugal pair Coeur", dated of Paris, 1919. No n.º3,  publishes an extract of  "0 Menino d'Olhos de Gigante".

1924

Publishes  "Pierrot e Arlequim".

1925

Paints  two famous panels for the coffee "the Brazilian of the Chiado "

1926

 Directs and publishes the conference "Modernismo". Publishes "A Questão dos Painéis".

1927

Initiates a  five year stay in Madrid.

1928-9

Writes "El Uno. Tragedia of la Unidad", the set of two theatre  plays "Deseja-se Mulher" e "S.O.S."

1932

Returns  to Lisbon. Directs and  publishes the conference "Direcção Única".

1934

Directs and publishes the conference "Cuidado com a Pintura". Marries painter Sarah Affonso. Son José Afonso de Almada Negreiros is born .

1935

 Launches a magazine, "Sudoeste, of which he  integrally writes the two first numbers of the three  publications, in which he includes   poem n.º3 the  "As Quatro Manhãs".

1936

Directs the conference "Elogio da Ingenuidade ou as Desventuras da Esperteza Saloia", later published in January of 1939 in the "Revista de Portugal 6".

1938

Publishes "Nome de Guerra", a romance written in 1925. Directs and publishes the conference on Walt Disney "Desenhos Animados, Realidade Imaginada".  Finishes the stained glass windows of the Nossa Senhora de Fátima church, situated in Avenida de Berna, in Lisbon. Almada's work  in this church are the stained glass windows  of the "Santíssima Trindade" in the Choir; the stained glass windows, mosaics and doors of the Baptistery; the stained glass windows "Calvário" and "Nossa Senhora da Piedade"  in the Chapel of Nossa Senhora da Piedade; the stained glass windows "Nossa Senhora do Carmo" and Rainha dos Cristãos" in the Chapel Nossa Senhora do Carmo; and the stained glass windows and Eucharistic symbols of the baldaquino of  Abside.

1940

Daughter Ana Paula de Almada Negreiros is born.

1943

Produces theinitial studies for one of his most representative works the frescos at the Gare Marítima de Alcântara.

1944

Directs the conference "Descobri a Personalidade de Homero".

1945

Completes the frescos at the Gare Marítima de Alcântara.

1948

Publishes Mito-Alegoria-Símbolo - Monólogo Autodidacta na Oficina de Píntura".

1949

Completes  the frescos at the  Gare Marítima da Rocha do Conde in Óbidos. "Antes de Começar" opens for the  first time at the  Estúdio do Salitre Theater.

1950

Publishes "A Chave Diz: Faltam Duas Tábuas e Meia de Pintura no Todo da Obra de Nuno Gonçalves".

1952

Publishes the poem  "Presença",  dated of 1921-1951, in the magazine "Bicórnio".

1954

By request from the "Irmãos Unidos" restaurant, he paints the famous portrait of Fernando Person sitting at the  coffee table with the title of "Orpheu". This painting was to become one of the most representative paintings Modernist  era in Portugal.

1956

Publishes  "Antes de Começar".

1959

Publishes  the piece "Deseja-se Mulher", written in 1928. Conceives cards of tapestries for the Ritz Hotel.

1960

Publishes ""Assim Fala Geometria - Almada Negreiros Reconstruiu a Obra-Prima da Pintura Primitiva Portuguesa na Capela do Fundador do Mosteiro da Batalha", in a series of interviews to the "Diário de Notícias".

1961

Finishes painting decorations at Cidade Universitária de Lisboa

1962

 Directs the conference "Poesia e Criação", published in the published in "Diário de Notícias" on 8th November.

1965

 Publishes "Orpheu 1915-1965".

1966

Almada elected honorary member of the National Academy of Royal Arts

1967

Almada decorated with the great officiate of the Order of Santiago and Espada.

1969

Finishes the panel "Começar"  at the Fundação Calouste Culbenkian. Completes the frescos at the Faculty of Sciences at the University of Coimbra.

1970

Dies in Lisbon, the 15 of June aged 77.
